I can’t tell you how often I notice kids suffering from Kiddy Stress. I teach all different kids and they all have different levels of activities, but the one thing they all seem to have in common, their parents are afraid to raise them the way we were raised.

The overwhelming commentary that I get from these parents is, they had their kids later in their life and with that came knowledge and wisdom and with that brought fear because they see all the horrors that are out in the world now.

So, they enroll their kids in a million activities so that “going out to play” in the afternoons after school no longer has to be a reality and the fear then goes away.

The other thing is being well-rounded. Colleges are demanding that kids come to them already well rounded. Music, sports, art, community service - they need to have done everything already.

As for us adults doing too much? AMEN TO THAT. But as already discussed… unstructured time is license to do nothing. At least for me. So I choose to keep myself active and busy. But it does cause me to have relaxation issues. I work hard at combatting that and trying to strike a balance.

If I ever have a child, I don’t want them to learn that trait from me. I want them to relax and have fun while being inquisitive and having a thirst for knowledge.
