September 11th, 2007 | by Vinny |At the time, I was the supervisor for the music department at a suburban school district. I had left my building to visit another and observe a teacher.
While there, the building was locked down. Unaware of the resons, I reported to the Main Office for information. When told of the situation and the district-wide lock down of all staff, I offerred to step in for other staff who were stuck off site. I filled infor a Phys Ed teacher while he filled in with my Band classes.
My wife called around lunch time. She was concerned and wanted to know whether she should take the kids out of school. I pointed out that since the schools were locked down and well supervised, they were equally safe (or safer) in school and thus should stay. Besides, the media was covering the tragedy full time, and thus it would be harder to keep it from them at home than it was at school.
We spent the better part of the next few hours and days making sure everyone we knew was safe. It’s funny to think now that we could have been so unsure about who was there at the time. I guess we didn’t do all the things we do now to keep in touch.
Regardless of where I was then, I believe that (even with the strife I have in my life, and that is plenty!) I have to be thankful to have my two children, a loving wife, and an out-of-shape but relatively healthy body. Sure, a little less stress would be great, but considering where we could be as a family, we do alright.
God bless you and yours on this day of reflection. Let us all take a moment to hug our kids and wives a little closer today and say “Thank You” to those in our lives (including any Deity) that make each day a little easier to face.
