It’s All About the Mommies
January 28th, 2007 | by Vinny |If you’ve ever taken a good look at the internet, there are a lot of groups for moms, but not too many for dads.
This is the Meetup.com list for parenting groups near my home. Not one is for dads. There are couples groups, mothers groups, parents of twins. Nothing for dads. I’m not quite sure why.
Are we less organized? Are we of lesser need? Is there a fear that we would just sit, drink, and talk about porn? Football? Hockey? I was kind of hoping to find a group and try it out. I had more luck finding a group for harmonica players.

Because men, as a rule (you being the exception, of course) don’t typically seek out the parenting comraderie of other men. Perhaps if they did, the world would be filled with involved fathers like you.
And perhaps there are other fathers out there thinking the same thing… look at the growing number of fathers who blog and those who are the stay at home parent. Start your own group. If you build it they will come.

If I start my own group, I will be in for the ass-kicking of a lifetime. The Mrs. would be all over that- “First blogging, then podcasting, then a Daddy club? What about me?”
She deserves more of my time, not less. She is already the least appreciated Mom around. She shouldn’t have to wait for me. I’d love to join, bu organizing is not in the cards today.

I happen to know that here in VT, we have a Tuesday dinner program, and Friday storytimes dedicated to Dads. Interesting, though, I went to Meetup, and for my area, not one parenting group made the list, but some other interesting alternatives did:
* Vermont Poker Meetup Group (22 members)
* The Vermont Polyamory Meetup Group
* The Northern Vermont Democracy for America Meetup Group (1,312 members)
* Un peu de conversation au Vermont (28 members)
* Indie Film Meetup
* Alternative Energy Meetup
* The Morrisville Truck Driver Meetup Group (2 members)
