Geni- Family Trees on the Web
January 30th, 2007 | by Vinny |I was poking around and stumbled upon Geni, an online genealogy program . You start with a simple Mother and Father entry, and your tree quickly grows from there.
I had a good time getting the first few generations up there. I read recently that they were having some trouble with security, but they’ve got it all under control.
What I love is that I could get it going, email the links, ad have others add on. I also like that it is all ajax-y, meaning it’s a little bit of World 1.0 meets Web 2.0.

There’s alot of great genealogy info out there. I was able to search one branch of hubby’s family back to the 1300’s to King Edward III. Once you get on a role it can be quite addicting.

All should understand that if they input or write anything at a website like GENI … they are basically giving their information away to a firm that will repackage that information and sell it to the next guy. This is the classic buy low (in this case free) and sell high. If you do not value your efforts in gathering your genealogical history then it might be perfect. I attach more value to my research efforts and have too much respect for myself and my family’s genealogical information than to give it away to a company that will sell it to my other relations … no matter how distant or closely related they are.

Some would refer to a website like GENI as genealogical predation. Think before doing this kind of exercise.
