Nursing Mothers May Find Relief- in Texas?!?
March 7th, 2007 | by Vinny |State Representative Jessica Farrar of Harris County, Texas has introduced a bill that would reverse a horrible law allowing Texas businesses the right to kick nursing mothers out who refuse to stop nursing their children in their establishment.
Now I can’t say that the State of Texas is against breastfeeding, because it’s not true. As a matter of fact, “The Texas Department of State Health Services recognizes breastfeeding as the ideal nutrition for infants.” As such, women may breastfeed where she is “authorized” to do so. Business, however, can revoke that “authority” and ask a woman to stop or leave. So the Great State of Texas can say unequivocally that they support a woman’s right to breastfeed, leaving it to the “non-politico, don’t give a crap what you have to say narrow-minded misogynistic asses” to do what some are apparently dying to do: persecute nursing mothers. If the state truly supported breastfeeding, it would be illegal to treat nursing mothers differently than any other person.
Now Texas has never been a bastion of democracy and personal freedom. However, Representative Farrar gives me hope. I can’t paint everyone in Texas with the same brush. That’s encouraging. Your state still pisses me off (a little less executing, a little more education, OK?) but if there are more like you (and KCB), I could be convinced to even throw a few vacation dollars at the Alamo.
Of course, now that I’ve written this, I will have to travel incognito, since this is where Cheney does his quail hunting.
Thanks to Redneck Mother for bringing this to my attention.
